The Heist on the Silver Knights Bank. Chapter 11.

It all began here, with a harmless little story from Addy.

https://adamskistoryblog.wordpress.com

You’ll have to dig around between Addy’s blog and mine for Chapters 1 to 11.

Now, it seems, he has an artist interested in illustrating our story. Steampunk rules!

Over to you, Addy!

The Heist on the Silver Knights Bank. Chapter 9.

Yes, it’s been a while. Here’s the next chapter in the steampunk-inspired epic started by your friend and mine, Addy.

It began here:

The Heist on the Silver Knights Bank. Chapter 5 Part 2.

Scope, scale, and escalation. I like making a story bigger by peeking into the personality and thinking of a character. Prince Kaustikos becomes Regent Cyanide and then the King of the Ruled. With names like those, he needs to be a real bastard. Here he is, and here are the links to the rest of the story.

Addy wrote Chapter 1 here:

https://adamskistoryblog.wordpress.com/2015/07/31/the-heist-on-silver-knights-bank

I wrote Chapter 2 here:

https://p33d33.wordpress.com/2015/08/03/the-heist-on-silver-knights-bank-chapter-2-fanfic

He wrote Chapter 3 here:

https://adamskistoryblog.wordpress.com/2015/08/04/the-heist-on-silver-knights-bank-chapter-3

I wrote Chapter 4 here:

https://p33d33.wordpress.com/2015/08/07/the-heist-on-the-silver-knights-bank-chapter-4

Chapter 5 is here and introduces Pryderi, the forgotten son of the King and a captain of an Unruled warship:

Part 2 introduces Cyanide.

The Heist on the Silver Knights Bank. Chapter 5.

What began as a short story Addy emailed to me has taken on a life of its own. In this chapter I wanted to dig into the background of the Steampunk Captain. Perhaps Addy or SouldierGirl or maybe you would like to have a shot at expanding this or another character. Don’t be shy. It’s a bit of fun. We’re not writing Hemingway here.

Here are all the links you need from the beginning of the tale.

Addy wrote Chapter 1 here:

https://adamskistoryblog.wordpress.com/2015/07/31/the-heist-on-silver-knights-bank

I wrote Chapter 2 here:

https://p33d33.wordpress.com/2015/08/03/the-heist-on-silver-knights-bank-chapter-2-fanfic

He wrote Chapter 3 here:

https://adamskistoryblog.wordpress.com/2015/08/04/the-heist-on-silver-knights-bank-chapter-3

I wrote Chapter 4 here:

https://p33d33.wordpress.com/2015/08/07/the-heist-on-the-silver-knights-bank-chapter-4

Now I’ve written Chapter 5 here because I’m wordy and prolific and everyone else is a slacker I have to drag along, kicking and hopefully screaming.

Enjoy.

Tempora Mutantur. Part III. (Final)

It began here:

https://p33d33.wordpress.com/2015/07/28/tempora-mutantur-part-i

Then it escalated here:

https://p33d33.wordpress.com/2015/07/29/tempora-mutantur-part-ii

Now it finishes here. I think the ending to this is one nobody is going to see coming, and I think it’s the most surprising ending I’ve written.

For those of you not versed in Latin (yes, there are still some people who can’t speak it), Tempora Mutantur means Times Change. Enjoy.

Romulus and Rhema. Part 1.

Everyone loves werewolf stories. This one came to me last week and it was so compelling I stopped another story to catch this one while I could. I wrote a short for Wendig’s latest Challenge but really, that one was pretty different to this story.

I’m not a huge fan of following a formula; I’d rather write an ordinary story than a derivative one, and this is no exception. It’s not your usual boy-meets-girl, boy-eats-girl werewolf story. I wanted to see what it would be like to tell the story from the werewolf’s perspective. There are a few twists and turns, but I like this one. It’s a long story at around 8,000 words so I’m splitting it into four or five instalments. Pull up a chair.

Enjoy Romulus and Rhema.

The Disobedient SoulKeeper.

This is an odd sort of story and it feels unfinished to me, but I’m still recovering from the workweeks from hell, so this is all I have. It’s a continuation in the theme of Soul Keepers and the Presence, which I’ve written about before. In this one, however, I wanted to explore the downside of an involuntary spiritual awakening.

I wanted the character to struggle with the differences in perception between doing what’s right and doing what appears right. So, this story is a little dark, unforgiving, and unresolved.

The Journey Without Distance.

So, this is a sort of prequel to the Dylan and Evelyn stories.

1. I Will Not Be That For You

https://p33d33.wordpress.com/2015/05/19/i-will-not-be-that-for-you

2. Not What I Expected

https://p33d33.wordpress.com/2015/05/20/not-what-i-expected

3. Everything I’d Hoped For

https://p33d33.wordpress.com/2015/05/24/everything-id-hoped-for

4. Because I said I Would

https://p33d33.wordpress.com/2015/05/25/because-i-said-i-would

I just can’t work up any enthusiasm for Evie so once again I’ve made her a bit player, a reference point, to tell the background story of Dylan. Hopefully, it fills in a few gaps about how Dylan came to care so ‘quickly’ for Evie. There’s also some stuff about the Presence, because that seems to capture peoples’ imaginations.

Enjoy.

Everything I’d Hoped For.

This short is the conclusion to:

Not What I Expected

https://p33d33.wordpress.com/2015/05/20/not-what-i-expected

and the first story I Will Not Be That For You

https://p33d33.wordpress.com/2015/05/19/i-will-not-be-that-for-you

In the first story I only wrote it as an exercise, to see where I could take a character I’d been thinking about for a while. That received hugely positive reviews from, let’s see, 4,5, about 6 people, and a few questions came up about the future of the character, Dylan, that I was a bit curious about, too.

So, in the second story I gave him a girlfriend, because I wondered how or even if he’d handle it. I thought Evelyn was a bit two-dimensional, but I wasn’t very enthusiastic about writing her. I saw her as being a simple progression character there to extend the character of Dylan.

I see this stuff differently to you folks. To me, these are just experiments in writing but to you, you weepy, whiny fuckers 😀 these characters take on a life of their own. Thanks for that.

Having felt that I didn’t do much with Evelyn, and given that you seem to like her and care about her and Dylan, I thought I’d write a little backstory to fill in some of the gaps. This is it. I think their story isn’t over yet, and to resolve that I was going to throw in a few big dance numbers and a spectacular fireworks display at the end. However, I must be getting old and all squidgey around the edges, because I’ve decided to leave them alone and let them make their own future, instead of returning once more to the impossibility of a beautiful and lasting relationship.

So, here we are. You got your happy ending, you fuckers. 😀

Petrichor.

This short came about via Thumbup posting about ‘Petrichor’, which is a pleasant smell that frequently accompanies the first rain after a long period of warm, dry weather. This is a slight divergence from the recent trilogy that began from Souldier Girl’s image and poem, and which unleashed Unlocked on an unsuspecting and largely oblivious public. This one is more metaphysical and comes with a warning:

:::Self-harm:::

The idea for that came from painkills2.  https://painkills2.wordpress.com

She likes to write about really distressing stuff that I can’t bring myself to read much but which mostly needs to be written. Others might find their names slightly modified, as referential characters.

Here’s Petrichor.

The Soul Keeper.

The ‘better angels of my nature’ like it when I write stories like this. I generally don’t listen to them, because what the angels are implying makes me uncomfortable.

This story had its genesis in a few others, most notably in a picture and poem by Souldier Girl.

http://souldiergirl.com/2015/04/21/my-yesterday-2

The first story is here: Unlocked. https://p33d33.wordpress.com/2015/05/05/unlocked

From that story and the comments in it, I wrote Psychosphere.

https://p33d33.wordpress.com/2015/05/10/psychosphere

The Soul Keeper is the progression of both of them, and I suppose as far as sending a message can go on a barely-read blog, I wanted to say that not all men are evil, that not all women are innocent, and that somewhere in the Great Somewhere, there is a consciousness that wastes nothing.

Thanks for this sometimes personally painful but nevertheless worth-writing collection go to:

Uncommon Beauty VI.

Resolution. This is the last part. Up front, I’m not sure I liked the ending but it is unexpected. No spoilers, though. Thanks to everyone who followed this. What began as a single short grew into 6. Here are the others. Perhaps in a few days I’ll tell you the backstory to this. In some ways I think it’s much more interesting than the one I wrote.

“So that’s how you trash your own life! Why don’t they teach this stuff in school?” Hayden thought. Not only was he out of a job – one he really liked and was good at – he was being bombarded by the psycho-bitch-troll-from-hell and being studiously ignored by the police. “It doesn’t get much better than this,” he thought, sourly. “Living the dream, dude. Living the dream.”

Uncommon Beauty IV.

Thanks again to everyone who has been liking and commenting on UB. You’re all in this next instalment, along with a goat.

Here’s where it all began and where it’s progressed since then. Enjoy!

It was such a whirlwind, that first six months. Of course, I was on my very best behaviour when Hayden picked me up and took me to Rockpool, the latest and greatest city restaurant. I had to practice enormous constraint just to keep my hands off him, and instantly I knew he was The One. It was, quite literally, love at first sight. “How did you manage to get a reservation at such short notice?” I asked him. Rockpool is always booked out months in advance. “At first they said no, but then I told them you’d be disappointed and all of a sudden there was a table available,” he said. He’d told her the truth but she laughed as if it was an incredible joke.

Uncommon Beauty III.

Dedications on a small and almost reader-less blog orbiting the unfashionable end of the blogosphere are pretentious nonsense, which is a specialty of mine, and this part of the story is for the fans. Dorkchops and Ipsy V, maybe one day you’ll say ‘hi.’ This one’s for you, and thanks for ‘liking’ the stories so far. Miss Zee! Hello, You! And even Bob the Wordless gets a mention, too. I think this series will ultimately have six parts.
